Bronx fire: At least 19 reported dead and dozens injured in ‘horrific’ apartment building blaze

At least 19 people were killed after a catastrophic fire broke out in an apartment in Bronx, New York City, officials said.

“This will be one of the worst fires ever seen in New York City today,” said Eric Adams, the new mayor of New York City, at a news conference.

According to the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), a five-warning fire broke out on the second and third floors of a building on East 181st Street before 11:00 am on Sunday morning. The FDNY said about 200 firefighters are working to extinguish the flames.

According to city officials, the flame injured 63 people, 32 of whom were sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries. At least 19 victims have died, including nine children.

“The numbers are scary,” said Mayor Adams.

A video of the fire from the Citizen app shows a flame burning from a window in a brick building and a huge pillar of smoke. Screams and crashes can be heard in the background.

At a press conference on Sunday, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said firefighters arrived at the scene within three minutes of the 911 phone call.

“They encountered this fire in the hallway-very heavy smoke, very heavy fire,” said the commissioner. “This smoke spread throughout the height of the building. This is quite unusual. Members found victims on all floors of the stairs.”

According to Nigro, the fire began in a double apartment on the second floor of the building and quickly spread because the doors were open. He said the cause of the fire is still unknown.

“I still don’t know how the fire started,” he said. “It will be investigated, and I’m sure Marshal will decide it.”

Fire survivors explained the horror of finding their apartment suddenly filled with smoke.

“We were just trying to breathe,” said Wesley Patterson, a 20-year-old resident of the building. New York Times..

Mr Patterson tried to open the window, but said he had burned his hands. When he finally opened it, more smoke from the outside rushed in.

“I was screaming” Please help me! Please come! “He remembered yelling at the firefighters below, but they couldn’t contact him yet. About 20 minutes later, FDNY members pulled him and his family out of the window.

“I’m glad I was safe, but I still can’t believe it happened,” Patterson said.
